During this Christmas season, “The Nutcracker” has been very successful and “Swan Lake” will return to the stage in February. The new film “Black Swan,” starring Natalie Portman was also released. As a result of these successes, ballet has become one of the more noticeable trends in the fashion world.

Although many fashion designers have taken their inspiration from romantic costumes such as tutu for their 2011 Spring/Summer collections, many styles of ballet practice clothing have been getting more attention. The Layered look of socks over shorts and solid color tights (black color works best) have been extremely popular amongst the fashion industry this fall. Materials, such as cotton sweats, jerseys and knits used for ballet practice, are becoming more fashionable for everyday street clothes this season. As for accessories, ballet flats and feather hair accessories, like those seen in the costumes used in “Swan Lake,” have become popular, and the style of wrapped lace around the head for use as a head band, as used by Natalie Portman in US Vogue January, have emerged.

Fashion is certainly a key element of ballet, which involves superior beauty and grace created from an elegant atmosphere. Ballerinas stand out in this area. It is only natural that the fashion world would follow in step by taking the flexible figures, fluid movements and beautiful postures used by ballerinas and using them in order to enhance the beauty of women.

クリスマスシーズン、ニューヨークのリンカーンセンターで開催されているバレエ「くるみ割人形」は大いに盛り上がりを見せており、２月には「白鳥の湖」が開幕する。また、ナタリー・ポートマン主演の映画「ブラックスワン」も公開され (日本では2011春公開予定)、今バレエが最も注目のトレンドとなっている。

2011春夏コレクションではチュチュなどロマンティックな舞台衣装からインスピレーションを得るデザイナーが多く見られたが、バレエ稽古着のスタイリングにも注目が集まっている。無地（黒が主流）のタイツをショートパンツや靴下と重ね着するスタイルは今年の秋からお洒落な人たちの間で取り入れられており、バレエ練習に最適なコットン、スウェット、ジャージ、ニットの素材使いも今シーズンはストリートでファッショナブルに映る。アクセサリーは、バレエフラットシューズ、「白鳥の湖」の衣装で見られるフェザーのヘアアクセサリーがトレンドで、USヴォーグ1月号のナタリーポートマンの様にレース素材をヘアバンドの様に巻き付けるスタイルが新しい。

バレエにおいてはファッションももちろん重要ではあるが、バレリーナの優雅なたたずまいには特有の美を感じる。しなやかな体型やなめらかな動き、美しい姿勢などを普段の生活のお手本にしてワンランク上の美しい女性を目指したい。
